I know this is probably not a new question, and I did a search of the forum to try and find some help with this but...
I'm not new to the FS series, but I've never tried to go through all the lessons and such until '04 came out. Could somebody please tell me how to pass the "holding pattern" part of the checkride? I have tried it every which way there is and I still can't seem to get passed it. My alt, speed are all good but I can't seem to figure out what she wants as far as hdg back to the SEA VOR, and I'm obviously not sure what type of pattern to fly. I've taken the holding lesson several times just trying to figure out what I'm missing. I've really wanted to pass through all the lessons, and maybe join up with a virtual airline. But so far this is a real stick in my craw. I've shot that VOR approach so many times I see it in my dreams. I realize it's great practice and I can nail my decent and missed approach to the wall. Any help would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks in advance.
WELL aaron...
did you read the lesson plan? take notes on it? etc.? there are many reasons why you res not getting your stuff right.
you might want to study the materials a little better (with all due respect).
you might not be within the passing qualifications...IE:...your not keeping within 10+- the set speed, 100+- the set altitude, within 10*+- of the set heading...etc.
that could be your problem...it was a slight problem for me.
No I completely understand where you're coming from, but up until the hold I'm dead on within the parameters set... i.e. +/- 100`, hdg +/- 10*, +/- 2* on nav settings, and +/-10kts airspeed. It's just when I go to do the holding pattern I'm having problems.
Here's the scene....
I've just executed a missed approach at KSEA and climb at 500 fpm to 2100`. After passing the PARKK outer marker I'm instructed to climb to 3000` and turn left to a hdg of 160*. Once I make that turn I'm instructed to fly direct to KSEA and enter the holding pattern on the 140* radial. Now... When she says "direct to KSEA", does that mean to then turn for the airport and find the most direct radial from where I'm at and then enter the pattern with a parallel entry? Or even pick up the 140* radial from my 160* course, pass over the VOR, fly for 1 minute and execute a left turn and pick up the 320* course inbound?
I tried staying on 160* earlier and set up to come in on 110* for a tear drop entry and she didn't like that apparently. I mean if I was in the real world and Rod was teaching me I could ask or even the checkride instructor to expand on these seeming abiguities, but the scripted nature of the sim, of course, doesn't allow for this. If you could just point me in the right direction. I'm not looking for a hand hold here, but just some clarification on what exactly is required. Maybe I'm over analyzing this, but it seems me and the FAA and I have reached an impasse where holding is concerned.
BTW I'm a 7yr combat flight sim vet starting out in WWI with Red Baron II and Red Baron 3d, and then moving to WWII a few years ago. I've flown quite a bit in FS2004, and fly often between my home airport KGGG in Gregg County and KDFW in Dallas in a DC-3. I love that old bird. But I'd like to take my virtual piloting to the next level, but I can't seem to get through this checkride. I've been trying for an embarrassingly long time, and rather than just give up and keep doing the seat of the pants stuff I want to master it "by the book" so to speak. I've always thought it would be kewl to fly for a virtual airline, and that Texas Air looks sweet. I'm 38 and live in Henderson Tx with a little unmanned strip (ID. F12). Anyway, no disrespect taken King Air. I appreciate the reply. If it's something I just have to sweat out myself... well I can dig that.
Again I appreciate the reply, and if you have anything more I'll be in your debt. And that's a marker I give you permission to call in if you ever need it... provided you can help that is.
aaron
P.S. sorry about the length of the post, but I thought a bit more info might help.
Hello all and love the site..... been a member for years. This is my first post so that makes me a nube. lol I am having the exact same problem with this instrument checklist test also. I think the problem is, including my limited experience with charts, that when you execute the plan to abort the landing it has you fly out on the heading 339 and climb to 2100 feet minimum. Then she gives you the instruction to climb to 3000 feet and turn left to heading of 160 when you pass the outer marker at parkk. So chart is having fly straight basically, it flies you directly over the marker and wants you to do a right procedural turns to take a heading of 159 back over the airport. She wants you to do procedural turns to the left, which according to the handbook is acceptable. The problem is when you fly over the marker she gives you another instruction to head directly to the marker and to stay on the VOR heading of 140, before you complete her other instruction. I've gone through the ground school handbook, and have done the lessons a bunch of times to see if I am missing anything and I am in the same place as the gentleman who posted the original post. The only difference in my understanding and his, is that he is saying this is a holding pattern, and I am saying its a procedural turn. Any help would be appreciated, and if you figured out how to get past it yourself, I would really be interested in what the problem is and why. Seems like a programming error, or the chart is incorrect.
I feel your pain. On the ATP checkride, the instructor tells you to intercept an outbound course that is COMPLETELY different from the one you are SUPPOSED to track.
To be honest, i wouldn't be surprised if you were doing everything perfectly and the computer just didn't realise. Unfortunately, i can't volunteer to try the lesson because I deleted FS9 when I installed FSX.
Have faith in yourself. If you're convinced you passed, you probably did.
Have you compared the instructed flight path's with the real world charts for the airport in question? Also, am I mistaken, or dont you have to enter the holding pattern at a specific point regardless of approach, such that you would have to exit on a radial and then correctly enter the pattern again? Does FS care which way the wind is blowing when determining which holding pattern to enter? I must admit that I have not done the lessons, being a mechanic means doing it first and then seeing if the instructions agree with what you've done...
There is a little quirk with that part. Just before you cross PARKK, the evil lady will tell you to turn left to 160 and climb to 3000. As soon as she says this, reset your OBS1 to 140. Keep flying 160 until intercept. Cross the VOR, reset your OBS1 to 320 and continue heading 140 for about a minute. At this point, you need to turn and intercept the 320 inbound. Turn a little to the right (180) for about 30secs then left to 320. This should put you close to on course, just make small corrections as necessary. You're now on the track. Cross the VOR again and turn right to 140 for a minute. Then right to 320 on course.
When you cross again, you'll get direct NOLLA NDB (362 ADF, tune it in ahead of time). Should be a heading of 326-328 from the SEA VOR. Just fly the ADF right to it. You need to set your OBS to 130 and NAV1 to 110.9 as soon as she gives the clearance to NOLLA. When you cross NOLLA, back track the ILS on at 310 for a minute, then make your prcedure turn to 265. Stay on heading for a minute, then right to 85. **IMPORTANT** Stay on 85 until the needle is within a few dots of center. Turning too early will fail you. Once you intercept it's ILS all the way down. Try to stay on course, you won't have a lot of time to make corrections when the runway becomes visible.
