that HD looks just great. Storage will not be a problem, provided that You do think a little before installing and remove things You havent used for two years. I have a 160gb seagate myself, with 30 gigs of it under linux and 10 for win 98 (i hope i get the time to install it some time, uh-oh), and the rest under xp. I have had to think for a bit before installing, but it is nice. And WD is a well-known and good HD company. and the other specs for the drive are nice, too. So go for it.
the memory looks nice too, good firm, but i couldnt find the latency value anywhere.
but that drive... it does not write dvds??!?!?? i thought owning a dvd writer was The Eleventh Commandment by now ("Buy a writer, for thee must save thy precious HD space") plus, its costs only like 2-3 times more. |

You need a power supply, since I noticed your case doesn't have one.

I agree with Mythrilfan that you should spring for a DVD burner. You can get the Sony DRU-810A for about $45 with rebates and when it is on sale. |

I just bought a bunch of components. My memory, cpu, and mobo together were $960(US). The PSU was $95 on sale, and I got an eVGA 7800GTX KO card on eBay for about $460.
Since I've been doing nothing but eating, sleeping, and dreaming CPUs, motherboards, water cooling, etc... let's see what I would put together.
First, definitely a socket 939 motherboard. Do you plan on SLI (dual GPUs)? Then you'll need to get one that supports it. Also, make sure the board supports SATA drives. These boards can run from $99 to $350.
The AMD Athlon 64 seems the most popular processor choice for flightsims; your call whether to go single or dual core. I bought the dual 4400. The 3800, 4000, 4200 and 4600's have a 512kb cache; on the 4400 and 4800 have a 1Mb cache for each processor.
RAM - stay away from the cheap stuff. Check the motherboard manufactuer's website, see if they have optimized RAM for your board. I got an A8N32-SLI board from Asus. Corsair makes a set for the board - 3500LLPRO 2gb. If you go to their website, you'll find a great tool for determining which memory to get for your board... www.corsair.com.
Don't skimp on the power supply... the 7800gt video cards need at least a 450w psu. Anything 500w and above should be okay, just don't get the bargain-basement prices. I guess $50-60 should be your minimum. If you double that, you can get the coolest supply ever: the Hiper Type-R 580W (this one's certified by nvidia for SLI) Here's a link: http://www.xoxide.com/hiper-power-supply-blue.html
Those are the key components. A high-end hard drive like a 10,000rpm Raptor can run $150 and up. Then you've got cooling systems. The cooler you can run the components, the faster they may operate. Check out some of this wild stuff:

Good luck! My stuff is arriving this week. I'll post a new thread and let everyone know how the install goes (or doesn't). |

Here's my suggestion for a system (US sales/dollars)
www.zipzoomfly.com - used to be GoogleGear- usually cheaper than anyone else.
If you buy the eVGA nvidia 7800GT you get a free motherboard ($99 SLI/SATA - not a bad deal). That's $350 total.
The Athlon X2 3800 and the straight Athlon 64 3800 would be the processor choices - personally, I'd go with the x2 for future applications. Either one will set you back about $300.
2 gigabytes of Corsair matched RAM costs $180 (after rebate). You can go for the higher speed stuff for another fifty dollars.
Power supplies can be had for $30 and up to thousands. The Antec 500w for about $65 looks pretty good.
So far we're under $900... Get a fifty dollar case, add some drives, and you're set! |
