Ok, I'm a newbie to Fs2002 and this site and have no aspirations to become a Real pilot but....... I'm asking for some guidance please.
I love just flying from an airport I know to another one I know, using IFR, and then trying to land safely. not very ambitious i know but it pleases me.
So why the post?
I'm trying to add to this experience by having a good-looking airport to leave and the same to fly to as well as having some realistic scenery to fly over.
So I start looking through this site and find stuff that I can't even pronounce, let alone understand. It may be very good stuff (I stare in awe at some of the work) but I have absolutely no idea if any of these downloads are of any use to me.
I don't need any other aircraft yet, quite happy with Fs2002's basic planes....
Don't need any other airports, (I like flying in Texas and Europe)
but is it worth for instance, downloading a Dallas scenery if I'm only taking off from there to fly to Houston?
Would I notice any difference from 10,000ft?
do you get my drift?
Thank-you for bothering to read this far and again, many congrats to all of you that have contributed files and tuitions to this and other sites.
But like I said earlier, all I'm looking for is to enhance my limited scope in this sim and then maybe, just maybe, I'll look to try some other sides of the sim.
You might as well. Heres a senorio: say you fly from Houston to Dallas? then you might want to have some, there are other scenery files I have but dont use but only once and a while, like my accvall.zip & accvaii2.zip scenery files, carriers. I even have aircraft I don't use, infact I don't use half of my aircraft more than 20% of the time I've used Fs (mine's 2004/9) but they'er there so if I have the urge to use them I can. The same goes for scenery.
Well, what eve you do, have fun.
I think it would depend on what planes you fly, and how important a more realistic, accurate or detailed airport is to you at this point. If you are mostly taking off in jetliners and just climbing to altitude until your approach at your destination, then you may not appreciate landmark, or city and town type of scenery enhancements. If you just want to take off in any of the leisure type planes or whatever aircraft for low & slow sightseeing, touring type flights then you may want to explore some ground eye-candy add-ons. There's lots to explore in the world Microsoft provides, and no rush to download, have a look around for a while, and where you find the default scenery lacking is where you can start the search for the perfect add-on. They do 7 or 8 bigger airports up in FS2002 with better detail and some ground vehicles, and lighting posts, etc. (Have a look at Las Vegas.) As you go you'll find that the better you get at determining what you want and finding it, the more fun there is to be had. Ha ha, and sometimes the chase is better than the catch.

maybe I need to think more about what FS has to offer but...... I'd still like to take-off from a realistic airport and land at one aswell.
It usually depends on what kind of airport and where it is in the world. MS has paid most attention to scenery in the US, since it is made there and that's where most simmers live. So Microsoft has made Airports in the US more detailed than those in Europe, let's say. But both regions have very high detailed large airports. It also depends on the size and/or importance of the airport. JFK is more likely to have massive airport details and accuracy than, let's say, a small airstrip in the Himalayas. It all makes sense, and yet, cruel. But there is always room for improvement, even JFK. If you are looking for Dallas Airport, you might find it here http://www.surclaro.com/download.php?op=search&query=Dallas and Houston here http://www.surclaro.com/download.php?op=search&query=Houston
Hope this what you were looking for. Best regards
On the Flight Sim sites that offer downloads they usually have a few clear-cut categories. You'll find aircraft under 'Aircraft' and airports, towns, cities, terrain mesh enhancements, landmarks, etc under 'Scenery'. Paying attention that d'loads are for your version of FS saves headaches, too.
Yes, And ESPECIALLY when you have FS2002, since most of the downloads are for FS2004, so you must really pay attention, like harkonen said, to add-ons which are "FS2004 only" or which are "FS2002 only", etc... It REALLY saves headaches by taking some time in reading the description as it is NOT always clear. If you download an add-on that is for "FS2004 only", it will not work (properly) in FS2002, so avoid that! Similarly, downloading FS2002 add-ons usually doesn't work in FS2004, especially FS2002 ProLMAX (or something like that) aircraft will NOT work properly in FS2004 and will give you an error message, when loading that aircraft thet "it is not fully compatible". My point is, take care when downloading add-ons for FS and see which add-on is for which FS. Good luck to you
But don't be afraid to experiment when it comes to trying an FS2004 plane in FS2002. If it's no good just delete it. I tried the FS2004 KUAT StarWars ships recently in FS2002 - no go. Also tried the even newer FS2004 StarWars Snowspeeder and it worked like a charm. (Nice work and a thank you to TimPiglet Conrad for the snowspeeder.)
So Harkonnen, you have both FS2002 and FS2004 installed and working on your PC? Both with a massive library of add-ons?? My FS2004 add-on library is MASSIVE!! I have an FS folder of 35GB . That is like >1/2 the size of my entire E:// Drive!! I predict my FS2004 will end up in somewhere 50GB until FSX comes out. I am still downloading like a mad cow (luckily for my high-end computer which lets me run FS smoothly even at those sizes!!)
God, I wonder what my FSX add-on library would look like in 2010 ! Perhaps 100Gigs?? Gosh, that accounts for a new hard drive.
Nope, just FS2002. I mean when downloading stuff. If I see a FS2004 aircraft that I really want, I'm going to try it in FS2002 anyway on the off-chance that it will work. Sometimes when doing this you'll get an aircraft sound and the aircraft lights but no visible aircraft model. You'll know it's no good before you even fly, as the aircraft preview model does not show properly in the aircraft selection box if it's not compatable.
not to twist any arms, or step on any landing gear... but i have a few aircraft in my fs2004 folder that are for 2002 that have no landing gear struts in the preview window, but yet when i click on "FLY NOW" everything is a dream (well other than i would like to have afterburners and a tail hook on a 737 - 777.. and airbus models... that would be fun lol)
scortch the runway as you take off in an A380 full afterburners, loaded down with 20 tons of cargo LMAO just think of it
Is it possible to add Afterburners to aircrafts in FS2004 ?? Just wondering, lmao seeing the A380 take off with thundering fire coming out of the engines . Just wondering
not that i have found yet because you actually have to add in the effects to the aircraft, and i have not figured that out yet... im sure it has something to do with one or several of the .BGL effects files. but that would look sweet wouldnt it???? lol A30 with a 20-30 foot afterburner....
