I found this nice page that very neatly explains how different aicraft engines work. It is a part of a larger site that describes various engines.

That's pretty cool. I like it. Check out www.howstuffworks.com. They have a load of how almost any engine works, even a stirling engine. It's a very interesting site.

Question. How is the direction of rotation decided on a gas turbine and could it run in either direction.

Well, the engine could be made to run in either direction, but you would not be able to stop it and make it reverse direction. It's all about the timing of the pumping mechanism. In a reciprocating engine, we change the camshaft profile to change the firing order and valve timing causing the engine to run opposite to the common clockwise rotation. many front wheel drive Honda's are a common example, they run counter-clockwise. Many multi engine boats will have one of the engines operating counter clockwise to minimize vibration against the hull and reduce cavitation with multiple props. The "valves" and "camshaft" of a turbine engine are the direction and shape of the compressor and stator vanes.

Umm, you also need to have the starter that can spin in the direction of the cam timing. Put the wrong one in an older ford, and your screwed. And yes, a diesel can run backwards when 5 minutes ago it was running normal direction. But you will hear an ugly sound. With the use of computers now, that is a thing of the past

Hey GS, a friend of mine needs a reverse rotation starter for his F 460 mounted on an air boat. Know where I can get one??? None can be found or rebuilt around here.

Whoa....now that's a tall order. Does he have the marine type left hand starter mount block, or is he trying to accomplish this with the standard truck/auto right hand starter mount block? I cant believe you dont have a competent motor shop around that can wind a dc motor for reverse rotation. Have you checked boat/marine suppliers?? Dont forget to check with NAPA, as they carry a lot of med/hvy truck and marine stuff or can order it. Failing that, let me know and I will run some research for you.

Parts houses look at us as if we don't know what we are talking about. Some looked it up, some fell silent until we left.

We found 2 shops that could do it.....for $500-700. We can get magnets and brushes, but no go on the commutator. This one is junk.

We've been looking since May '06.

If ya can find something, let me know please.
