I do quite a lot of helicopter flying around the globe. Quite recently, I was flying low and slow over the countryside a few miles SW of Luis Munoz Marin Intl (TJSJ) in Puerto Rico. I flew over a small collection of farm buildings at FL 300', when I observed some strange shadows near one of the farm buildings. I circled back and landed next to one of the buildings. There were black and while cows grazing in a kind of corral adjacent to the barn. First time I've ever seen anything like this. I took a screenshot but am having trouble attaching it to this thread. I keep getting "This Page Cannot Be Displayed".
HELP REQUESTED RD!
Also, I've seen several bill board type signs in many residential areas that display an image of what appears to be a small, Cessna-like AC. Can anyone make a stab at the significance of this image, if there is one?
What static scenery goodies have you discovered and where?
Jae

At the seaward end of the runway at TNCM there is a signboard which says beware of low flying aircraft or something! And they have done a good job with this airport dont you think? With the sunset bar and what have you..?
However they have botched up the adjacent St Barthelemy (TFFJ) right royally! And a challenging little airport too it was! I should have a go at it with either AFCAD or Rwy12 Object Placer! |

Shankar,
I would love to see any improvements made for St. Maarten! I've been operating an imaginary helicopter service out of TNCM for some time now. I've seen the runway sign you mentioned. I would like to know what (in reality) the collection of stone buildings are at the end of the runway. It looks rather like a prison or a military installation.

Are you talking about the seaward end? I think, as you fly in from the sea, the group of buildings that you see to the right of the "Maho Beach", like some scattered huts, is the "Sunset Bar" or something. Halfway down the runway on the right is a "Mary's Boon Hotel". That's all I know. I got these from a powerpoint presentation on this airport (I think the file name was "aeropuertotncm.zip" - its all in Spanish) that I downlaoded from here. The others I think can be found out if you can get hold of a map of the place. Try Google.

I think this link is from a recent post, one of our newer members I think, with his own website. Scroll down 13 download file thumnails for a St. Maarten add-on. See what you think. I've seen numerous others for this area here and there.

Shankar,
Yes, the seaward side of the runway. Just borrow an FS9 helicopter and low-cruise out to the end of the runway and begin circling to the left. You will see what looks like either a Penitentiary/Prison or some kind of military installation complete with a high, surrounding wall and what appears to be a tall watch-tower. I have downloaded your recommended "aeropuertotncm.zip", but haven't had an opportunity to review it. I will repost my findings on this thread for those who share an interest in this beautiful island. It is my dream to visit this place non-virtually someday.
Harkonnen,
Thank you for your assist. That D/L is for the Grand Case airport on the French (opposite) side of the Island. I've installed it on my PC and I love it! However, there is a small disparity between the relational size of the "people"---for lack of other terms---in this otherwise fantastic scenery and FS9 aircraft. At 1024x768, ground personnel are scaled a bit larger than they should be. But otherwise, this is a very nice addon. I enjoy it immensely, although it takes a bit of a hit on my framerates.
For everyone's information, there is also another fantastic D/L available for St. Maarten. Google TNCM9v1.zip and upgrade TNCM9v2.zip. This addon is REALLY nice. Airport enhancements, buildings, fishing boats, yachts--one or two with helipads, birds in flight all over the place and lots of eye candy.
ALL of these Freeware D/L's, for the beautiful Island of St. Maarten is definitely worth it!
I would love to hear from any other St. Maarten enthusiasts, or someone who has actually visited this tropical paradise, for whom I have a thousand questions.
I discovered this jewel of an island by accident while island hopping in the general vicinity with stock FS9 Scenery. I fell in love with this destination immeditately. I performed a few searches and came up with the two aforementioned addons.
FYI: There is a whole chain of other well recognizable island destinations within view from all points around St. Maarten.
I'd like to hear more from any interested in this destination. Always looking for scenery upgrades for this area
Whoops! Gotta go. Just got a call for heli-rescue mission for a sinking watercraft!
