I use AVG Free Edition, avast! antivirus webshield and Zonelabs ZoneAlarm.
I believe that the avast! webshield is an antivirus software. This means that it protects your PC against viruses and the webshield simply does that, i.e it scans the files that you download from the worldwide web for viruses
However ZoneAlarm is not an antivirus. It is a firewall. The function is different. It protects your system from hackers and other malicious attackers. It prevents any data from comming into or going out of your PC without your express consent. It also configures your ports to operate in a stealth mode so that to anybody who tries to access your system (unsolicited) on the net, your PC would simply not exist or would be invisible. I believe a firewall like ZoneAlarm is more important on a machine connected to the web with a permanent IP address, than an antivirus!
You require both actually. As you can see I use two antivirus programs and a firewall for protection. Unfortunately, using two firewalls simultaneously can cause ill effects, so I have disabled the Windows Firewall.

On the first page check out "Shields Up!"
Alternately try out

Test your system for stealth at these sites. Test it with and without ZoneAlarm. Then decide for yourselves. |
