Hi, I'd be really grateful if some could help me with this problem...
I have been running FS2004 on my PC without any problems for a year.
I bought a brand new hard drive 2 months ago & installed Windows as normal & everything has been running fine. Yesterday I installed fs2004 but I'm having serious problems now. Whenever I try to take off, the screen goes black & the PC reboots as soon as I lift off. I have tried this at different airports & with different aircraft & it still happens. All other aspects of my PC are fine.
I have read other peoples comments and so I have tried a few things...
I uninstalled & reinstalled FS2004.
I installed update fs 9.1
I installed my old graphics card, then re installed my main one.
Reinstalled the joystick
Scanned my pc for viruses & spyware - All clear
None of this things made any difference, so now I don't know what else to try. Below I have copied the Windows error report that appears after the reboot, aswell as my PC SPEC.
FS2004 used to run fine on this machine, the only difference is the new hard drive. However I did try to make a back-up copy of my original fs2004 discs, and install using the copies. I got an error on disc 4 and was told some files were missing so I may have to reinstall. Without testing the program I did uninstall & reinstall using the originals. I have since reinstaled FS again with the original discs.
PLEASE can someone help??

OK,
2 things come to mind.
First, do you have all your drivers updated??
Second, try deleting your fs9.cfg. Then restart fs9. It will build a new .cfg .
Try those 2 and let me know what happens.

Hi RD, Thanks for your prompt reply.
OK, I deleted the fs9.cfg file from the folder "C:\Documents and Settings\John\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9" I assume this is the right one, I was expecting to find it in the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9" folder. Anyway As you said, a new fs9.cfg file was there once I ran the program again, however the crash & reboot still occurs.
Next I went online to downdoad the latest drivers for my graphics card & joystick. I installed them but guess what - fs2004 still crashes.
If I just sit on the runway it seems stable, but as soon as I start to move and the position of the horizon changes it all goes wrong. I also tried the "Chicago O'Hare Approach " flight, and sure enough, 30 seconds into the flight it all crashes.
I'd like to find the solution, but I'm thinking formatting my hard drive & reinstalling Windows & everything else, because I get the feeling its a corrupt file somewhere. I don't really want to do all that though beacuse its a real pain in the *beep*!
Any more ideas would be appreciated. |

Allow me to explain what my computer does at random times. It just restarts, out of nowhere. There's not ten seconds in between FS2004 going black and me seeing my eMachines (my computer brand) screen indicating the computer is starting. It really ticks me off to the point of saying bad words, especially when I have the runway of my three-hour flight's destination in sight when it does that crap . Jonny, is this the same, or similar problem? |

FSPilot06: My fault sounds similar to yours, except mine always occurs, without exception less than a minute into the flight. It seems as soon as the horizon moves, the whole system crashes. Thanks for your reply!
dudler: I have tried all the things suggested on this link, but no change I'm afraid, Thanks anyway for your help.
I'm now thinking of creating a partition on my hard drive & installing a fresh version of XP and FS2004, and nothing else. I hope this will side-step the fault rather than cure it, and I will have more resources available when running fs2004. Has anyone else got this kind of set up & any tips of how best to do it? I'm planning to use Partition Magic 8.0. |

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply!
I am pleased to say I have solved this annoying problem, although I have worked around it rather than fixed the fault itself.
I bought a new 40 GB hard drive for £28, which I installed and divided into 2 equal partitions. I installed a clean version of XP and fs2004 on the primary partition. Everything now works better than before because there's no other applications draining resources. As a bonus I can now use the other 20 GB partition a storage drive for my main OS on the other drive, making that run smoother too. Everyones a winner!!
I hope this thread helps someone else. |

do u have any birds that require the .dll gaugesound? I would get it from an aircraft download and put it in fs9/mian folder anyway.
furthermore, you stated u have 14 gb left on the hd, i do not care how you cut a pie, the fact remains the os needs a min of 12 gb for system restore. get a 80-120 gb hdd before you lose restore points. You need 12 max gb for max number of points. or risk it, your choice.
I say if it is working great, beware though
