Too bad.
Great system. You may be a bit disappointed in the LCD monitor as far as gaming goes. Dont rule out a quality CRT for better depth. Check the web for the latest debates on LCD vs. CRT in gaming environments.
Also, thank you for removing that attrocious avatar. |

You will not have problems with the LCD. It is probably a bit subjective, but I have noticed that the LCD at my shop seems a bit too "bright" in appearance and when adjusted for better color then seems a bit on the dark side. Also, when viewed from an angle some of the image tends to wash a bit. This may not be the case with high end LCD's, but is what I have observed so far.
Can we hear from anybody actually pushing FS on an LCD? |

I am with groundsquirrell on the crt thing. I am on a 17" dell right now and have a new 19" phillips 1600x1200 85hz sitting in my closet for when this one eventually tires. I should be good for 3/4 years anyways. By then they will have lcd's that work for gaming.
My daughter purchased a good 19" lcd and I much prefer the crt. As long as you can get a min. 85hz out of it! My 2 pennies.......
Richy
Edit: And the Crt cost me $215.00 CDN. |

I prefer CRTs mainly for one reason: the resolution can be changed without much difference in quality. I can play FEAR with xga, not sxga, with which my current gfx card would melt, without any blur apperaing on the screen |

I have ViewSonic's newest LCD monitor and it works great!!!!!! I can see images just as sharp as from any angle, wether it be 85 or 45 or 0 degrees, all is at best quality. It is a beautiful 19" monitor with high definition and sharpness. I have no problems whatsoever and it is a GREAT gaming experience especially when you have a good system and high framerates! I am very satisfied!
Another issue with CRT monitors I want to point out is the traditional "don't play too much computer or it will hurt your eyes" thing. It's true. CRT monitors do hurt your eyes if you are on it for a long time; it gives you a "square eyes" effect. This is because at the back of the monitor, there is an electron gun, which shoots electron beams into a phosphorous screen. But the dangerous thing is that some electron streams just go right through the screen, creating radiation, and that is what's hurting your eyes. And that's why your mother says "don't play too much behind the computer or you'll hurt you eyes".
Now, LCDs don't have an electon gun nor radiation. An LCD is a flat panel which has liquid inside the screen (that's why you get a weird blurry effect when you touch an LCD with your finger) which should protect you from any present small radiations. What an LCD uses is mostly lamps, mirrors and lenses, which are totally harmless to the eyes (or at least, a lot less dangerous to the eyes than CRT monitors).
I remember 2 years ago, when I used a CRT, I would get "square eyes" after 3 hours of simming, and feel the blinding effects which my mom warns me about. Now that I have an LCD, I can sit behind my FS and fly for 12 hours without problems or even noticing anything . That is one example that proves LCDs much healthier to the eyes than CRTs. So the next time your mom says to get off that comp, you say "Mom, this is an LCD screen, LCDs don't hust your eyes anymore! ". That's the power of technology and the evolution of computers!!!

I know CRT's are better for gaming, but I still use a 17"LCD for two reasons, much smaller and much lighter! They take up so much less space on your desk, they are great. I admit the quality of the gaming experience may not be awesome but to the average person I dont think you can tell the difference.
I play FS2004, UT2004, TOCA RD2 & 3, Colin McRae 2004 & 5 on my monitor all on full res and graphics, and dont have any problems.

I'm not saying that there is any problem or anything, but for me, 19" are simply better.
I used to sim on a 17" (CRT) and it was fine, yes. But when I got that 19" (LCD) baby, I was so amazed at the gaming improvement and the removal of the "square eyes" effect, I went simming 24/7 lol!

Looks like a great system, jojo... I just did a massive FS system upgrade as well, and I couldn't be happier. Which 7800GTX card are you getting? I have the eVGA 7800GTX KO - it's an awesome card.
I'm running a Samsung 940b 19" flat panel LCD (funny thing, I'm at work, where my monitor is a high-end Dell 19" CRT!).
Here are the thoughts of the old guy:
The LCD has its obvious advantages - smaller and lighter, and most importantly, draws less power and generates less waste heat. In terms of picture quality, however, the CRT does beat it hands down. Just put your nose up against the two and compare pixels - I can easily see the pixels from three inches away on my LCD, but the CRT's pixel plane is much tighter - 10pt text and I cannot even see separation between pixels. An added benefit of the CRT is the higher resolution. While my 19" LCD is limited to 1280x1024, my 19" CRT will run 1600x1200.
As mentioned, my primary monitor is a 19" LCD. I also run a second, 15" LCD monitor, which I use to display the FMC/CDU, throttles, and system temps when flying the PIC737. The LCD isn't bad... and it's much better after tweaking it. This is really important with LCDs. I ran the NVIDIA Display Optimization wizard, then ran the Samsung MagiColor tuning software. The LCD is a thousand times better now. The Samsung has an autocolor setting where I can choose the most appropriate balance for the application - I've found that the "Movie" setting provides rich, warm colors from FS2004. And with a refresh under 8ms, these old eyes don't notice any ghosting or other artifacts.
If anything, I think part of my blurry tiles problem is because the LCD is so clear and crisp, much sharper than the CRT, so I notice the borders between tiles more. |

In my case, that's incorrect. My ViewSonic LCD monitor is the best I've ever seen!! Even though it is 19", I NEVER seen any pixelage and have NEVER seen any pixel borders anywhere till now. Even if I try my best to scan for any pixelage and search for hours, I couldn't find any. If I do find any, it is very slight and anti-aliased. I have the latest model of ViewSonic and it is a hell of a great monitor. I deeply recommend it to any FlightSim enthousiast since I experience a lot better picture than my previous CRT monitor. It also has 8ms refresh rate and can view the sharpest picture even the distant corner of the the monitor's view range. Just brilliant!!

Capt El, the anti-aliasing is made by Your gfx card, not the monitor.
Jojo, tell us more about that new CPU of Yours. |

What I meant with that was not that it was like that. It LOOKED like that. Even a 4MB card would have made no difference as the monitor is the one that makes it high definition.
