Hey, if your computer is dead, how did you make this post?
I know it's a stupid question, that's why I asked it before somebody else did. |

Maybe you've blown your CPU or your PSU?, check them for black smoke where they may have gone bang! Is you PSU powerful enough for your system? Also check your fuse in the plug!

Sometimes the most complex problem has the simplest solution. Do a systematic check starting the the plug you are using for the AC, then the power cable...etc. Move down the line and you'll find the problem. Most often it's the cable, on/off switch or fuse in the power supply. If that doesn't work then shout back and we'll go from there...

Your power supply is overloaded... With high tech video cards high memory and disk and processor working hard you need a minium of 300 watt power unit.
With MS Vista and FSX, high power video cards, and fast drives they are recommending 600 watts or greater..
90% of computer hardware problems is due to power supplys. Make sure the cooling fans are working. Otherwise, get a new 400W power supply..

CRAP,
Thanks all, but I tried just about everything to get this thing powered up, and still no joy. I even followed Exx's lame directions. And by the way, the fuse in the plug is good and rated at 10 amps. More than enough.
I really don't want to take it to a shop. So......I will keep trying. Any others with any ideas.

RD,
If you've got a ton of dough wrapped up in this machine, I would not hesitate to take it to a good mechanic. Your Avatar is very disconcerting at a time like this because it doesn't let anyone know where in the world you are situated.
In Minneapolis, we have this little (asian) Mom and Pop computer shop. They charge dirt prices and they will tear down and diagnose your computer right in front of your eyes to diagnose almost any problem for $50. Oftentimes, if the fix only takes a few minutes, they won't charge you anything. My advice, for what it's worth, don't look to the big chain stores like CompUSA, Best Buy, for repairs. Go to the Mom and Pop shops. Make a few calls.
Don't tear apart your machine just yet, RD. You might create more problems by doing so.
What about a tripped circuit breaker, or blown fuse? Have you tried testing the electrical socket(s) where your computer is plugged into? For instance, will the same socket(s) light up another appliance other than your computer?
Like myself, do you have fifty different components running off of one poor little 120 volt socket?
I'm thinking man, I'm thinking here.

Probably a fried power supply box.
I'll give you a hint so it doesn't happen to you again as I've learned my lesson on this as well...

Well, I baited my hook with the smallest of worms. I tried to catch some bass, but got nothing but sucker fishes. Using the same worm.
Sorry all, but you've been had.
RD
PS: I was going to let this go on and on, but thought better of it. GS nibbled, but didn't bite. Everybody else did. Hook, bait, and sinker. LOL |

| That's why they call it hardware. When you are done playing with it, you can use it to beat yourself over the head with. I had hoped my powers of observation would be carried along by the crewe, but oh well. ya' gotta give 'em points for trying to be helpful. |

10/10 well done, GS had a point but alot of people have more than 1 computer these days, or you could be communicating via your work place.
Regardelss, i'm impressed.
Maybe there should be new thread for obvious humor?

RD:
I disagree with your conclusion. Groundsquirrel displayed his usual high degree of intelligence. However, by not responding to his question, you were not playing by the rules.
If you take a car to Groundsquirrel for repairs then it is your responsibility to communicate with him to resolve the problem. If you refuse to answer his questions then you are not going to get your car fixed.
Instead of classifying the respondents as "Suckers", I would call them very helpful, patient, intelligent people. |

RD, here's some troubleshooting advice, FWIW:
1) If you press the power switch and nothing happens.
Make sure there is good power coming out of the end of the plug going into the power supply.
If the power is good, make sure the on/off switch on the PSU is on (if it has one... some don't). Also doublecheck the voltage switch, make sure it is securely on 110v.
2) If you have good power going into a switched-on PSU, check the motherboard's standby light (this is, of course, dependent on the mobo model and features). If there is no light, then there is no power going to the mobo, and your PSU is bad.
3) If you have a green standby light, the next step is to test the power switch. You can do this by locating where the leads plug into the motherboard (a bunch of little wires, for speaker, reset button, hd light, etc). Once you locate the two wires coming from the power switch, take a screwdriver and short them out (make conductive contact between the two posts). This emulates exactly what happens inside the switch when you push it.
4) If the system starts up, then your power switch is bad. If it doesn't, then the motherboard is bad.
Good luck.. post your results (and your equipment list if this doesn't fix it).
