Never knew RAM could make such a big difference in performance, especially in such an intensive game! My previous assumption was the fact that RAM doesn't make much impact on system performance.

Capt El,

I have no problem running it the way it is. I am getting a head start on the programming end of it. Building scenery, effects, and so on. While it is kinda on the slow side, avg 15 fps on 3/4 sliders, I also understand that this was NOT built for my system as it is.

So, going by first impressions, I ignore them, and/or let it go. No need to get in the dumpster and take a nap until everything is available.

Should MS have released it without everything available, IMHO, NO !!! But they did. And you and everybody else knows that the system that is running it right now, is indirectly incompatible. Yet we/they, still bought it.

The main issue here is the "Resource Utilization". Whenever any of your computer resources (CPU, Memory, Disc I/Os, etc) utilization gets above a "saturation point" (usually around 70%), your performance will suffer. I spent a whole week at an IBM Computer Class about 10 years ago just to study this topic (Queing Theory).

When I observed an average Main Memory Utilization of 85%-90% running FSX with average settings, I suspected that adding more Main Memory would help. In addition, during some of my extensive research of several postings in various FSX forumns, I observed that several people suggested that we have "at least 2GB" of main memory.

At my age, we like to count to 10 before spending a lot of money. I prefer to tweak my computer settings and spend a few bucks now rather that rushing out to buy a whole new computer which costs several hundred dollars. Perhaps after Vista is released and I have a chance to monitor all of my tweaks, I will jump into a whole new computer system.

WITH AGE COMES PATIENCE--I know that there will not be enough left in the Social Security fund when I am ready. Therefore, I must evaluate my financial situation closely Cool Cool

Skipper Dan is right on... I am going to wait on Vista. My business computers will probably never be upgraded...

Hey Dan don't sweat the Social Security. As an ex Fed government 'crat, I can say that there is plenty of SS money... The Government will fail before SS will... There is no SS fund. SS comes off of the top of all federal income... We have so much income that we can't count it fast enough....

The important thing for ex GIs is to get an analysis from SS and check your work records and see if you are paid up. Check your military time, you may have to pay back some. I had to from my 'Nam time but, it was well worth it...

Back to Vista:

Here is a program that will check to see if your PC will run Vista...

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/upgradeadvisor/default.mspx

Building your own:

Yeah according to the gamer world the Intel duel or quads are the way to go... 2GB memory or more (the quads have 4GB). If you are getting new disks check out the hybrid Sata disk drives they are much faster than the old EIDEs... Plus, with the new graphics boards you will need at least 800 watts power supply.. Be sure to check your new graphics board some require a special power supply...

Check out the "Maximum PC" Jan 07 issue. They tested the new processors (INTEL won over AMD), Vista and DX10 graphics boards... Lots of important information...

All I am going to say is....

DO NOT GET AN AMD!...their old CPU's were great (I have one) but the new CORE 2 DUO E6700 *beep* all over the FX-62 and its cheaper.

Check out this....http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/cpu/charts.html?modelx=33&model1=464&model2=431&chart=174

I cant wait until DX10 and Vista will be released, and of course, evaluated.. I cant wait till I will be able to get my new PC upgrade to run this thing (my dad promised me a new gfx card because I passed Geometry summer school Very Happy ). But whats a DX10 card worth without a DX10 driver? nothing. So that adds more expense to my budget.

i can see that a lot of you have Very interesting posts with Very interesting information to share. Smile I'll b looking forward to more updates on the latest news in technology.

Something wrong with that product.

"Windows registration Key outside of box.....KEEP IT SAFE" wth

Price seems OK, but also about 100 cheaper than it should be. Could be wrong.

But the "KEY" on the OUTSIDE of the box???? Who's the friggin IDIOT that did THAT!!!!

EDIT: Or local stores are selling the Upgrade from home to Ultimate for 299, and the full install for 425 USD.

Be very careful about a Vista upgrade. HP said that some of their advanced printers will loose certain functions due to the fact the Vista drivers don't exist yet... The Vista generic drivers are used...

To get the DX10 graphics you will need a new graphic card... MS said most problems will be with hardware....

At this point, it is a waste of money (expensive) to upgrade. Plus, which version due you upgrade to? Vista Basic seems to be a waste of money...

Give it about 6 months, then enough information should be out to make the proper version choice...

TJ33--Good Advice.

Let's see who is the first one to run to Daddy's bedroom begging for Vista. Let him be the "sacrificial lamb" for the rest of us to learn from.

Or as Mr. T would say "I pitty the fool". Cool Cool

Also some FSX Benchmark testings show the Intel Core 2 Duo/Extreme (E6700, X6800) processors faster than AMD's FX-62/64 processor

I read an article in a Gamer magazine that when FSX is loaded with Vista it runs at slide show speed. This is because DX10 is not available.

If someone has Vista and FSX loaded please tell us how FSX runs.. Be sure to include the Vista version that you used.....

So far it looks to me that Vista is another ME fiasco. ME was flaky and drivers were hard to get. It quickly faded away...

Reading the business news, it seems that Vista didn't sell on the first day like MS thought it would...

Watch and learn before you buy...
