When watching the Air Show over Lake Ontario last year I thought it was really neat when the F-16 and F-18 came in close to the crowd after their routines and did their best to give all the best view of their aircraft with a low, sloooow flyover/flyby. Just full flaps, perfect throttle control and a bit of a nose-up attitude I guess eh? I enjoyed that, even though I was a little farthur away. I also enjoyed the pilots cranking their fighter jets straight up into the sky and letting her have it. That's gotta be amazing as a pilot with a fighter jet strapped to your back! I did wonder why they both finished a vertical climb like that with a stick-forward move that put them back belly-down and normal attitude, I usually like to pull the stick back and round-over to a wicked dive right away, rotating my wings 180* so that near the ground I could level out and whip off in the same direction I started from, very dramatic. Anything to it or did I just happen to catch one of many ways to exit a vertical climb in a fighter? Cool

Being a mechanic gives me a little intuition about machines. The newer high performance aircraft of today have much larger elevator/rudder area and can therefore effect pitch and roll maneuvers at much lower speed, then add to that the high power to weight ratio and voila. You can now simply pitch over positive at the climb terminus. It also presents less opportunity for disorientation and your blood is pressing up to your brain instead of heading for the kitchen door.

Dont forget that modern aircraft like the Grippen, Viggen, and eurofighter have canards at the front of the airctaft which allow more agile manouvering. And at the extreme end of the scale, theres the Mig-29OVT (which I have seen twice and is awesome) has thrust vectoring, which allows the aircraft to pitch even with zero velocity.
This allows it to perform the cobra manouver for example, see link below

The US Air Force and NASA also played with the front canards and vector nozzles on an F-15. While the abilities were totally awesome, the cost of building and maintaining them was the same as that of 6 f-117 stealth fighters. So guess what??

The smell you drive thru, isn't just that of a dead skunk.

Yea, that F15 rocks, canards AND thrust vectoring..wow.

I think modern jets should have puffer jets at the four extreme ends of the aircraft like on the Harrier, imagine that.

) And I had no idea it was that manouvereable (sp). I've seen several f-22 add-ons available for FS2004...I wonder how much attention the authors paid to the flight dynamics, are any of them even close?

P.S., ...I got goosebumps when she went by and displayed her weapons after watching all that 'clean profile' footage.

Believe it or not, I just reflew 3 of my F-22's, after seeing the video's. One by AlphaSim (payware), and 2 freeware ones. And NONE of them were even close. DSB has one, but the look of it is gross.

All of them were so unstable at less than Mach 1 (all went into overspeed), that you had to hold on, and push the 02 button to breath again. As well, none of them would let you go to a zero airspeed turn. The AlphaSim was probably the closest, but no where near close enough to do a "Cobra" manuever. It would stall, and throw you around. If you went to zero air speed, or close to Mach one, both would throw the plane into a frenzy. They do have a great model and animations, but flight characteristics, plain ass suck. You cannot do what the real bird can do.

After I am finished with the Maddie project, I am going to attack this thing, and get it right. Now that I have seen what it can do.

Those were pretty good.
Have you ever seen a F-22 do a loop like the Russians do?
They lose 140kts per second and can pull up to 15+g's while
doing so tight a loop that there is usually not more than 2 plane
lengths in the diameter of the loop.
That sounds pretty good to me, but I suppose the F-22 can do some
things the Russians can't. What does everyone think of the SU-37 Berkut?
That plane is pretty. Cool

I like the way they combined the vectored thrust
with the forward swept wing along with a canard and standard tail.
Those planes in the video I linked to are SU-27's. They are not as good
in my opinion.
I have never seen the SU-37 Berkut doing any of those maneuvers, but
I think it could do them better. Smile

Interesting stuff...., I do wonder if some of the shortcomings with the add-ons may be due to limitations in FS....I imagine they are still trying to overcome a few details regarding accurately simulating slower-speed flight dynamics and the way a plane would really react at those angles of attack and thrust levels. Great fun to dive into those .CFG and .AIR files and play, eh? Making changes, then firing up the sim to see how she flies. Have fun. Twisted Evil

EDIT: @ SU37...do you have a good model in FS of your favourite fighter? What's she fly like?

(I tried it anyway and it didn't work.) Laughing

Hey RD,

Those are SU-37s, there is a difference between the SU-37 and the SU-37 Berkut. The SU-37 Berkut has a forward swept wing, the SU-37 does not.
That is just one of the many differences. Also, The SU-37 Berkut is also reffered to as the SU-47. Just thought I'd let everyone know the difference.
Nice videos though. Did you see that first diagram of the tight loop?
That is the loop they do that usually does not have more that two planes lenghts in the diameter.
