Hey, I plan on building a new computer, probably next year. I know the technology will be old by then but for now i have planned;
O/S - Windows XP
CPU - Intel Pentium 4 670 3.8GHz 800MHz 2MB
RAM - 8GB
Hard Drive - 250GB
Video Card - e-GeForce 7900
Motherboard - MSI 975X Platinum
Power Supply - 450W
Monitor - 19"
Speakers (forget the sound card!) - Logitech® X-230
Case - Some decent (not very "gamer" looking) case by CoolMax
Cooling - Some liquid cooling I guess
This is all that I consider important to list, how does it sound so far?
NB. With other unlisted accesories it will come up to about $3,000.00, but oh well it will be my system that I love |

If your going to build it next year, depending on when, next year, your stuff is already old news and outdated.
Post your goodies when your 3 months away from buying/building it. Some stuff you can get now, but waiting will bring the price down and give you options for better systems, parts, and technology.

are you sure you'd better get a sound card. Onboard sound (and graphics for that matter) are the worst thing u can have.
And if i were you i'd wait till everything calms down ( dual core processors, windows vista, fsx ,direct X 10 and all that crap), then build a pc. |

yes, that is a descent system... but that was what I wanted a few years ago. Now, (if you are not a computer tech-whiz) you want a graphics card that SUPPORTS DirectX 10. This is if you want the best gaming experience and graphics... and Windows Vista.
Just want a descent system for 'average' gaming? Then you should be fine with the system you posted... but 8 gigs or RAM?? I dont think its possible to add more than 4 gigs on most cases...
So, for us to come to better conclusions, we need to know what you plan to do with your new system ... heavy gaming? 'just gaming'? work? multitask? etc etc... Or if you want performance?

Captain El the motherboard supports up to 8GB , 8 sounds good ... ok Claude, i'll get a soundcard , i want to multitask, more than "just gaming" but not solely based for gaming, programming, tinsy bit of graphics design, movies, music. Didnt notice that the card didnt support Direct X 10... Heard Windows Vista beta sucks on a review but i'll see when the full thing actually comes out, Then in 5 years or so u guys can help me build my $20,000 pc |

Then I would recommend the following:
O/S - Windows Vista (Premium for all Vista features)
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo (or Extreme) anything above E6300
RAM - 8GB
Hard Drive - 250GB or more... Western Digital or Seagate
Video Card - ATI R600 or nVIDIA G80
Motherboard - MSI 975X Platinum... or whatever
Power Supply - 600W
Monitor - 19" or more (I have a ViewSonic VP191 and it is EXCELLENT!)
Speakers (WITH soundcard!!) - Logitech® X-230
Case - Some decent (not very "gamer" looking) case by CoolMax
Cooling - Some liquid cooling I guess <-- There are some good fan coolings, but this should be better
Hope you have some big bux to spend on an above-average system

| If the motherboard can support the RAM, I doubt Windows XP can support up to 8GB. I've heard it can only support up to 2GB. As to Windows Vista, I don't know how much RAM it'll support. |

Or maybe it was 4GB, but I highly doubt 8GB. An easy way to check if Windows XP supports the RAM is to go to the Control Panel, and choose System. |

Maybe it is 8MB what you mean? I heard of 8MB RAMS before, although it is really low, it is a lot more possible than 8GB.
8Gb is impossible.

Cool. I wonder how that would stack up with the new DDR3 RAM thats coming out (if it didn't already).

| I am not aware that the OS is responsible for "handling" the RAM. The motherboard BIOS pretty much controls what's on board based on OS demands. I personally think that all boards should ship with maximum RAM installed. It would save a lot of headaches and questions with processor performance. |

Yeah, Claude is right.. Hang loose, until the dust settles... Having much experience with New Microsoft products, it is best to wait until you can get "real time" feed back on the products...
I bet a 4 GB memory will be necessary to get best frame rates. A dual processor will be required of course.
Vista will probably require a "bunch" of service packs to get it running properly, like most new MS op systems in the past...
I read that FSX will allow direct voice communtions with ATC. Probably will require a super duper 5.1 dolby 500W sound card.
The computer power supply should be around 1KW with liquid cooling on graphic and sound cards. Probably the processor as well....
Hook it all up to a "hard" switch panel with the best pedals and control stick and three visual panels you will really have a neat system...
I keep telling my wife, its cheaper than a real twin aircraft... (I like to fly twins)
