I received my game of FSX deluxe and as everybody else I am fairly disappointed with the way it hogs system resources and it requires the power of the sun in order to get descent frame rates and descent details.
What i am asking (and this is mainly aimed at tomcat but if anyone else knows anything please pipe up) is if there are any tweaks or hints people can share to help improve the FPS. Now i dont want the usual turn down the settings simple clouds etc etc, i was wondering, like tomcat had mentioned about certain card tweaks to help improve the frame rates. As on FS9 after i had tweaked the card settings, i got 30-80 FPS depending on the area, yet on FSX with settings on medium high i get 8FPS at the best of times to 30FPS on areas of low detail.
Or if anyone has found a good custom combination of settings that balances FPS with a fairly detailed display.
here are my specs so you have something to work on:
Pent 4 3.0Ghz Processor
XP SP2
1.5GB RAM
256MB 9600Pro (AGP)
120GB 7,400 HDD
FSX Deluxe
If anyone could shed some light, not just for me but others too, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all! |

| Are you running FSX on the lowest possible resolution? If you are, well, I guess you might have to live with it since FSX is a real hog. |

| You might as well just live with it, like I will once I receive my copy of FSX. You will get used to it, trust me. I am not extremely fortunate, compared to some members on this forum. |

thanks skipper, thats the sort of thing i was looking for. After reading i understand that microsoft plan to keep up after 2 years blah blah and DX10 cards blah, we wont go on about them for i am fed up with all the DX10 nonsense right now. So yes i suppose il get average FPS for the mo, but better detail than FS9, then in the future when prices fall, as they do, hardware gets better, il consider opening my moth filled wallet. Again thanks RD, keep em coming if u can.

I too sufferd from low fps 7 to be exact, turn the weather slider down to minimum and play around with the settings i did and now get 20-35fps the highest i seen was 45fps. My resolution is 1024x8.. something. Also i hope that with the upcomeing 64xbit OS (VISTA) that all of us will get better framerates.
and pj, the demo is very different from the final product |

By now, you'all have read the two links that I posted above. For those of you who choose to post questions instead of doing some research, here are a few posts from the above AVSIM link (which contains a great deal of valuable information):
I've been checking a LOT of threads and it seems that for every FSX whiner, there's a lot more people posting positive threads.
I played FS9 after spending hours with FSX and FS9 just seemed so, "flat". The up/downdrafts weren't even that noticeable, and the feeling of immersion just wasn't there.
It seems the whiners are in the (vocal) minority, not the majority.
Oh well, looks like us who like FSX will be enjoying our simming experience with a next-gen feel of flight and amazing visuals whilst the whiners are stuck with their FS9.
It happens following every release. For me with an average PC (it was pretty top notch 3 three years ago!) FSX is damned amazing, but it took a bit of time to get all the settings right.
When I first loaded up I thought I was going to be disappointed, but tweaks here and there and reading all the tips and downloading FR-friendly textures was worth it... FSX is just so cool now
A GOOD FRIEND IS SOMEONE WHO CAN STEP ON YOUR TOES WITHOUT MESSING UP YOUR SHINE. If I messed up anybody's shine with the above statements. then please keep in mind that I spent about two hours reading most of the items in the above two links. If a 60 year old guy can find time to do some research, then you'all young people should have more endurance than I do.

| One reason I'm happier with FS2002. It may not be the most advanced version of the game, but at least my comp can run it at full settings! That being said, once I get a dedicated computer (not for a while) for games, I'll probably run out and buy it as soon as I can! |

"As with every release of Flightsim we've ever done, it will be about 2 years or so before hardware catches up. We do this very deliberately because as people upgrade their machines down the road (and are still playing Flightsim), we want their experience to develop and grow."
Oh my......2 years.....I would be in college lol.
Hey Skip, do you think I can get better performance if I run FSX in Vista RC1? Or will I have to wait for the release of the real Vista?
EDIT: Never mind. I need DirectX 10 too. I don't think Vista will make much of a difference without DirectX 10 working on the side.... |

1. I didnt go by the demo, one main reason, it is no where near the final release so that didnt put me off.
2. I agree that there are less amount of vocal whiners that do put it down compared to the people that think it is a good piece of software, perfectly demonstrated by some of the posts on Avsim
3. FSX is not a waste of money (my opinion)
4. It will get better over time with updates etc
5. People will find a way of tweaking it, so it runs faster (like the top link that Skipperdan kindly gave)
6. When i find time, i will tweak my settings more, play around with them, and find out the weakpoints in my system so that i can improve the gameplay.
7. Now rather than filling more of this thread with crap about how i should spend my money etc, how about we continue where Skipper, 121a, and Alex started and find some ways on tweaking the settings more.

My system is only a Pentium 4 2.4g
My graphics card is an NVIDIA GEFORCE FX5200 128meg
(I will be getting either a 256meg or 512meg card soon)
I have 1Gig of Ram
I was wondering whether or not to get MSFS X
My system seems seriously underpowered for the sim but I have downloaded and tried the latest demo and it seems to work fine.
Does the full game need more power than the demo.
I woulg be grateful for any information on the difference in performance of the demo compared to the full sim
Cheers Chris |
