Hey all,
Having aquired CFS-2 Christmas 2001, & donloading free or purchased planes since about mid 2003, I actually played the game for the first time on line, with other humans, about 5 months ago.
Now I've been downloading planes (Free & Pay) since mid 2003, & playing with paint .air & .dp files shortly thereafter. I've been 'converting' planes from FS-9 for use in CFS-2 for about a year.
There has been a whole slew of 'progress' since CFS-2 was issued, why the compulsion with this game? CFS-3 had many 'teathing' & rendering problems, thoes aside it was never 'compatible' with the 'regular' MS Flight Sims, FS-2000, FS-2002, FS-2004. CFS-2 was/is. CFS-2 is able to be played on 'normal' computers, with dial up service, for thoes interested in multi-play (ever since I discovered multi-play...I've been hooked), without too much 'hassle' or rendering issues. There has been no CFS-4.
I fear with the 'advent' of FSX, well CFS-2 die hards are in troubble. I doubt very much aircraft designed for FSX will convert to CFS-2. The fact that FS-9 aircraft, about half of them, converted to & were able to fly in CFS-2, I believe, has kept our 'clan' active.
I'm looking for help, help in keeping this wonderful game alive. If you are intersted in playing CFS-2 on line; & or exchanging web sites & add ons contact me on this thread, at my e-mail address, or here on my web page http://groups.msn.com/TheCFS2FlightDeck
I have noticed that there is a big online community regarding CFS2. I had it a year ago on a crappy system and it would run stuttery so I deleted it. Now that I have a bit of a better crappy system, I crave it again but can't find the darn game disk to re-install. I'll be watching for a used copy though, as I cut my eyeteeth with CFS1 and I remember CFS2 being really excellent.
EDIT: BTW, can you mention what is generally involved in converting FS8, FS9 aircraft for CFS2?
...Conversion from FS-9 to CFS-2 is a rather involved process, each aircraft needs to be 'looked at' individually.
Basically however, most of 'us' use Ivan Hsu's MDLC converter & a hex editor such as FRHED to convert the visual models 'reflection' & 'animation'. Air files are converted using AirEd or AirWrench. Paint is fixed using DXTBMP and Paint Shop Pro. In most cases a panel needs to be created or associated, as do DPs. So I guess there is a bit involved.
