| Howdy Ill be turning 16 in Febuary and ive been wanting to get my pilots licence as well as my drivers licence. Seeing how next month I will be able to get my private pilots licence can anyone tell me what i need to prepair for as I have a couple of real life flying hours and hundreds of night, day and instrument flight hours in flight simulator. What do i need to know? If this is important i live by KVCB (Nut Tree) and KSUU (Travis Air Force Base) |

One thing to work out is the cost. Airplanes are rented by the hour at perhaps $120 to $150 with an instructor. It helps a bunch if you have a friend who has a plane they will let you use, but you still may have the cost for an instructor.
That's the bad news. The good news is that flying yourself is a fantastic and exhilerating experience. Even though it happened a long, long time back, I still vividly remember the day my instructor stepped out of the plane and told me to "take it around the pattern three times and come back and get me". Nothing I've ever done was so much fun. There I was for the first time driving the plane around the pattern. I was still on the instructors apron strings, but on a very much longer rope. The plane seemed to know how to fly so much better with just me at the controls.
After the first solo (which should happen in the first 10-15 hrs of instruction) you will knuckle down and learn much more about the many aspects of flying including cross country travel. I took about 50 hours to reach my goal of a private single engine land pilots license.
After flying powered planes for a number of years I got married and that ended my flying for awhile. Later, I was able to resume flying, this time with sailplanes. They are tremendous fun, real piloting skills and all without any engine!
I sincerely hope you get the full experiences of flying and enjoy it as much as I do.

Dear Jrtec13,
Don't you have to be 17 to get a private pilots licence? I thought it was 16 to solo, 17 to get licenced. That's just what I've heard, thought I'd let you know.
Cheers,

wow. old thread.
Anyway, (just thought id add this) KEEP YOUR STUDY MATERIALS CURRENT! Alot changes that goes unnoticed by many using old study materials. Make sure you use a recent study guide, books, etc. |

Dear King of Air 350,
Am I mistaken? Can you indeed get a private pilot's licence when you are 16?
Thank you in advance,

| You have to be 17 to get a license but 16 to solo. I only have 12 hours, so im nowhere near getting my license yet. |

Dear King OF air350,
I thought so. (I'm only 15 and I have 14 hours, I wouldn't have minded the limit being 16 .)
Your more than one fourth of the way done. You only need 40 hours to get a licence.
Good job.
Regards,

Like AvBufBob said, cost is a major consideration. You have to have 40 hours to take the checkride. So the total cost is around $6000 dollars. I must note that when you fly on your solo flights (that will make you feel good!), the instruction fee is not included, so you pay only the airplane rental cost. The cost of the lessons is what forced me to quit. |

That sucks.
But remember, your hours will always be valid for the rest of your life, so you can pickup where you left off any time you want. |
