Hi,
welcome aboard, hope, you'll enjoy it here.
Okay, there are two ways of doing it wich I know:
1. Placing static aircraft there
2. Placing particular Ai aircraft there by creating flight plans for them with the help of Afcad. As far as I know it is freeware and available here.
Unfortunatelly, I got not the experience to tell you details, others do better. But I recently read somebody telling there are some excellent Afcad tutorials out there, so keep your eyes open.
Have fun and happy take offs,
The Rhythmosaur

Hmm, sounds like someone is getting a little upset.
First thing, chill out, there are a ton of people here that are more than willing to help out anyone, just don't go demanding anything.
For all the time someone is sitting here typing what has already been typed a hundred times over, that's time they could be flying.
May I first suggest using the resources that are available on the web to answer your questions. The easiest way to learn how to do anything is just dive right in and figure it out. There are more than enough Sim sites that have thousands of tutorials that can explain how to do anything you want with your FS program. I came to this "hobby" or whatever you want to call it and didn't know anything. I took a little of what was said in forums like this one and the rest I found on my own. If you want something bad enough, you'll find out how to get it, how to do it, or where you can learn to do it.
These people volunteer to help out, this isn't a paid 24 hour help desk, take advantage of them and they may become turned off to helping out at all. |

OK, in an attempt to dismiss anyones thought's that I'm a jer after my last post above I offer this.
Not having any knowledge about AI A/C or what difference it made what A/C was sitting next to you at the gate or flying 5,000 feet above you, the subject of AI A/C was of very little interest to me. After reading kane35's post I figured I'd do a little looking around and see just how much work was involved in adding AI A/C to your hanger.
I scrolled up and found skipperdan's post and picked one of the sites he suggested. I went with http://www.afcad/projectai.com . I first read all the tutorials about AI A/C and found out what programs I could use, where to put the files I download, how to install, what things I should be really concerned about and what things didn't really matter when taking on this project.
The first page I visited was: http://afcad.projectai.com/general/afcad_help.php
GO THERE, READ IT...It's the AFCAD Intro (What are AFCADs?) page and it does a good job explaining what's what. what goes where, and how to get it there.
2nd: http://afcad.projectai.com/general/afcad_help2.php
GO HERE next, READ IT...this page tells you how to edit the aircraft.cfg files so your AI A/C park where they should park and you don't have a 777 sitting on the GA ramp among the Cessnas. It also explains how to edit the .mdl files to change the A/C radius so you don't have A/C hitting each other at the gate. If you want to get that involved and detailed, otherwise, skip that part.
3rd: http://afcad.projectai.com/general/afcad_help3.php
GO HERE next, READ IT...this page tells you how to install AFCADS.
This took me about 2 hours to do...once I was finished I went to my local airports website, found out what all the commercial airlines were that flew into it. Then I went to http://projectai.com/certified/ and went to the commercial A/C section and downloaded all the airlines that use my airport.
Once I edited all the aircraft.cfg files and removed all the default AI A/C and their flight plans, I started up my FS2004 and I had commercial A/C sitting at all my gates, coming in on approach, and departing. I went to other airports just to make sure everything was working right and so far, all is well. The airlines hub locations even show a significantly greater amount of their A/C at the gates versus the other airlines at that airport.
All total I spent about 3.5 hours working on this. I can say now that I understand what all the fuss was about, it is more realistic having the actual airlines operating instead of the default. I don't however understand what the difficulty is in accomplishing this project.
I guess what I'm getting at is this, if you use the resources available, take your time, and do some of the work yourself instead of looking for someone else to hold your hand through it and do the work for you, you can get it done. I'll admit, it was long on time, but that was the worst part of the whole project. It's worth it in the end though. |

What else could you expect than somebody just checks the whole way you are supposed to go for you and tell you if it was tarmac or offroad by drawing you a map on how to master it? It was more than I would have done - remember, it was 3.5h of his freetime. I say hat off!
Now reward him by following the path, and when you cross the finish line, remember who helped you.
Best wishes

EXCELLENT post, Ricktobin! You have inspired me to take the time to visit PAI and set this up. Looking fwd to seeing more traffic in my skies!
Many thanks for taking the time to work thru this, and post the process.

Thanks wackie and SailCO26. No idea how far you guys are in filling up your skies but there is more info in an older post under Forum: AI Traffic Discussions/DIY AI A/C Walk Through.
http://forums.surclaro.com/viewtopic.php?t=998
You'll find a copy of the above post and a couple more with details on getting rid of the default traffic and setting up flight plans for your new AI traffic.
FYI: To all concerned
I've recieved a few messages letting me know that a lot of the things I'm doing manually can be done with programs that are out there. Well, there are two reasons I don't use the programs.
First, I have a huge interest in tearing apart things and finding out what makes them tick. Kinda like the first time I tore my dad's new lawnmower apart many years ago. Well, same thing applies here and I think I get a better understanding of how and why things work the way they do by doing it myself. I've also found that while digging into files for one thing or trying out another way of doing something, I ended up learning something else completely unrelated to what I started out doing.
The second reason is the few programs I did try, I didn't like or they didn't work and it got frustrating trying to figure out someone else's junk. The time I spent doing that could have been spent doing it my way and finishing a lot sooner.
I know some of my posts can be lengthy (haha, like this one) and often times way more detailed than they need to be for some people but one thing that I've seen throughout the FS community is a lack of detail when giving instructions on how to do something. I'm speaking mainly of tutorials, not info passed out in most forums. It's as if everyone that uses FS is an expert in every aspect of the program and it won't matter if the instructions are missing a few details. Well, as everyone knows, details are a big part of FS working properly. Skip a few here and there and things start to crash.
Side note here...Don't forget about the Alaska Multiplayer flight tonight! For more details register in the MP Forum and check out Spectropro's flight information post. Anyone that hasn't tried MP flights and has the capability to do so should come check it out. |
