| Looking for opinions on best graphics cards on Flightsim X. I have a 3gz Dell 8400. Current card I believe is only a 64mb, and struggles even at medium settings on the game. |

It depends. What video card bus is your computer using? The Dimension 8400 sounds like a PCI Express slot. How many slots (if it indeed is PCI Express)? How many watts can your power supply crank out?
If none of those are an issue, including money, I would definetely spring for the 768 MB EVGA GeForce 8800 GTX Superclocked, possibly in SLI, for other games.
Price? MSRP for each card is $629.99 so in SLI that would amount to be $1259.98
If money IS an issue, I would recommend the GeForce 7600 or 7650 that you can get around $100-$150 with 256MB.
Try answering the above questions so we can narrow down the search a little. |

Since you are asking a question about FSX, I will give my usual answer:
SLOW DOWN, SAVE YOUR MONEY.
WAIT UNTIL VISTA IS RELEASED.
WAIT UNTIL VISTA IS DEBUGGED AND WAIT FOR FEEDBACK
WAIT UNTIL DX10 IS RELEASED.
WAIT UNTIL DX10 IS DEBUBBED AND WAIT FOR FEEDBACK.
DON'T RUN OUT AND BUY THE FIRST GRAPHICS CARD THAT RUNS ON DX10. |

To add to Skips post....Don't forget, NO DX10 card will work without DX10. Which also means, you cannot use it in Windows XP Home or Pro.

| As for me, I'll keep tinkering with what I have as long as the neighbors are jealous. Dont forget about component compatability, the baddest video card wont always be a good match with the baddest mobo, etc. Take the time to research clock speeds, front side bus and RAM port handling and speeds. Things like that. Check with the mobo manufacturer for recommendations. |

| Yeah, I thought the video card itself is backwards-compatible, but DX10 software is not. |

Viche is right.
And nowhere did I say the 8800 wouldn't work with windows or DX9. Only that you cannot use DX10 on ANY WINDOWS version.
I also reread my post. And noticed that I didn't mention that DX10 cards are compatible for Windows and DX9. But you will be using DX9, and not DX10. Therefore, wasting money on a high dollar card for DX10, just to run it on your system now.
My apologies for not being more specific on the cards mentioned abilities.

Thanks for clearing it up. I was pretty sure the 8800 was backwards compatible.
Basically, I'm saying, "I knew that!" |
