When ATC tells you to climb and maintain...lets say 5000
When you reach 5000 do you have to level out or keep climbing? |

| The key word is "maintain." So that means level out. |

Once you have reached 5,000 and leveled off, ATC is not going to give you an "attaboy" or say "Well done". If however, you do not maintain the requested altitude, ATC will remind you to climb or descend to the requested altitude.
Note: In real life, you are responsible for the aircraft. If you feel that it is not safe to follow the ATC instructions, you should reply with "Unable". A situation where this may be applicable would be if the you are flying VFR and there is a cloud at the requested altitude that you want to avoid. Another situation where you may have to say "Unable" could be if you do not feel safe making a "short landing" or if you do not feel that you are able to exit on the next available taxiway. |

Where as, if you are flying IFR, then once you have leveled off, and are maintaining the altitude that ATC has given you... then yes, you would wait for them to tell you what to do next. ex. " N437DB, Atlanta Tower, You are clear for IFR Departure to Dallas ForthWorth as filed. Fly runway heading, climb and maintain 5000, contact departure on frequency ***.**, Expect Vectors to Dallas Fortworth. " .. once you reach 5000ft, and contact departure on the frequency, they will then in turn give you more instructions on what heading to get you started on your journey.
(note: sorry if the example is not entirelly correct, it is by all means, an example.) |

Hi BlackAlpha,
Pilots don't like having to level off especially during descent because it wastes unnecessary fuel and is more likely to make your passengers ill.
An Air Traffic Controller will clear an aircraft down to FL160. It is considered good practise to give you further descent before you reach FL160 (say at about FL170). This keeps the aircraft descent profile nice and constant as the pilot doesn't need to level off all the time.
