Hey Behrentzs,
Aircraft are built with LOTS of different ways to do things, because you can't just pull over to the side of the road if something goes wrong.
Under normal conditions, the flaps are powered hydraulically. There are 3 hydraulic systems on a 737. System A (powered by the engines),B(powered electrically) and Standy (C). If system A fails, the pilot may switch to the B hydraulics and still have limited functions available to him. System C is the smallest of the hydraulic systems and is use only as a last resort.
Alternate Flaps can be used in the event of a System A and B hydraulic failure. However, the Standby system is very small and not very powerful. It can extend the leading edge flaps, but not retract them. Trailing edge flaps can be extended and retracted as normal, but it takes FOREVER! If i'm not mistaken, In the event of a complete Hydraulic failure, the Alternate Flaps can also be operated using the aircraft battery or APU.
Hope this helps,
Bromster. |
