black screen of death

Post by capt.PropwashKCHS » Tue Feb 10, 2009 5:26 am

RD, GS, MEL, T-FISH, anyone else that is more savvy than I ......

a friend of ours is having a problem with their Dell Dimension 8300.

Problems: Computer was in sleep mode, and when they tried to wake it up, the screen showed an error message "KEYBOARD ERROR" then went black with a blinking cursor. YEAH, NOT GOOD!

My suggestion to them was, try the onboard Diagnostic Tool, but when you hit F12 at the "DELL" splashscreen, "KEYBOARD ERROR" pops up and its back to black screen of death.

they have not downloaded anything to this computer in the past 2 months, virus scan / deffinations were up to date 1 day before the crash happened. also, they say that the laptop will not recognize any internal or external devices.... HD's, CD/dvd roms, printers, no devices will be recognized. .......

they can not get into safemode to troubleshoot... so...

Only thing that i can think of, is somehow the Master Boot Record is corrupt / damaged. But I just wanted to see what the rest of you thought.

I have googled microsoft support and the following is what i have come up with.....

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/155053

Swap out the keyboard with one that is known to be good and working. 8O

Also, make sure all connections are good, and you don't have a key that is stuck down.

nope. just the comp was in sleep mode, and when they went to wake it up... black screen of death.

Now, at times, Win XP will not even boot up. it either just shows DELL and goes to black screen and nothing else (power is on, but kinda like the monitor turns off) ..... or it shows DELL and then KEYBOARD ERROR.

But I'll tell them to check the Keyboard connections (prefferably replace the keyboard) and to check the Video connection just to make sure it is tight as well.

To me it just sounded more like the Master Boot Record was damaged, but i guess in the POSTing of the comp if the Keyboard is messed up that would cause the POST to fail.

I doubt if it's a HD failure. When mine committed suicide, it wouldn't post, or anything else. Just a black screen, with nothing on it.

There is a slight chance of a corruption in windows or the BIOS, but I still have money on the keyboard.

Hard Drive or MBR failure is unlikely.
