Whatever happened to.............

X-Plane is a comprehensive and powerful flight simulator for personal computers. It offers realistic flight model available for home and it's currently the rival of MSFS

Whatever happened to.............

Post by groundsquirrel » Sat Jun 26, 2004 11:58 am

Whatever happened to X-plane? Does anybody still use it? Was it ever updated? How did it compare to Flight Simulator?

The reason I ask is because I still see addons for it around the various web sites but there is only one thread with a single answer here at Surclaro. Was it a dud or something?

Groundsquirrel, X-Plane does indeed still live. The Forums and the website have both moved, but it is still being updated on a regular basis. I still use a very old version, but for things other than strictly flying. If you would like, I can email you the address for the tech forum.

Thank you for replying, I was just wondering out loud as they say. Is it safe to say x-plane has been eclipsed by FS?

For my money, unless you are designing an aircraft, stick with MSFS. Much more realism in general. The flight dynamics of X-Plane are still far superior though.

Question,

I had X-Plane, but the world was always water. Do you have to download the world piece by pieceto make it work.

The planes did look great and fly great, but runways in the middle of nowhere when your going into Kennedy seemed ridiculous.

Just a thought

Hi Cobra.

I'm new here, just got registered a minute ago.

You may have had the X-Plane demo. By purchasing the full installation DVD you get all the extras like the terrains and textures. Whenever you download those big updates, the update itself is the entire application but without scenery and a few other files. You must copy a heap of gigabytes of the old scenery data that came in the DVD's installed directory, into the new X-Plane Update directory and then you can toss out the older installation. Of course, the new X-Plane update cannot execute unless the original DVD is in your drive.

Obviously, I use X-Plane. I have the latest update, 8.11. My main gripe with X-Plane is the scarcity of X-Plane8 compatible aircraft. I guess I'll have to learn how to make my own, or how to do the conversion of aircraft from X-Plane7 compatible planes.

That earlier comment is certainly correct. Flight dynamics are superb in X-Plane. And for a noob flyer like me, it's pretty tough getting started. I also use MSFS2004 wherein of course the scenery looks a bit better, not much better but a bit better.

Hope this helps.

Pedro

Funny you should ask that question.

My brother just told me about X-Plane about 3 weeks ago. We both bought the newest DVD and got it the day after my system crash and burned. Have not loaded it yet, but will be trying it out tomorrow.

I have heard the flight sim is better, but scenery is lacking in detail.

Let you know soon :D

There are always...

Post by groundsquirrel » Sun Aug 07, 2005 6:41 pm

There are continually more and more things coming out for X-plane lately as I have noticed a few more places listing x plane downloads. I am still undecided though as I am recently bugging over Falcon4.0 Allied Force.

As for Rhythmosaur, he is still out there, but has not been on the net for a while.

Guys,
You are correct that Rhythmosaur was one of the giants in this forum. I remember that he said he needed more time for his schoolwork and would (like me) check in from time to time. I finally finished up my Biz degree and liked the program so much, I decided to continue on and get my master's. At this time, I seem to have a little more time and have been spending most of the extra time trying to catch up on the forums I follow including the ones here. I hope to be able to lend my 2 cents worth in every now and then.

OK, back to the thread.

X-Plane is actually pretty cool. I got the X-Plane v8, about a couple months ago. At that time I was kinda, yeah, OK, NEXT.

I decided I would start searching for support sites for it. Wow, there was more than I thought originaly. To be real quick about this, someone wanted a certain a/c and posted it here. A modified F-15 with front spoilers. I HAVE IT, NOW. And it is a dream to fly. Especially with the vectoring nozzles that is built in. Talk about a jet stunt plane, WHOA NELLY. The scenery was the main down fall at first. Not anymore. FS9 now has some competition with the scenery. The only problem is, you have to get it and add it. Where the default FS9 is better for scenery.

I haven't yet begun to modify X-Plane as I have FS9. Those that know me know what I can do.

If this thread is still here, I will post back and update you on it.

the only thing x-plane needs is a main like console thing like in fs cause in x-plane you have to do everything in the menu which gets really annoying

I have XPlane version 8.32 with whole world textures. I think about 60 gigs in all. I do find that support sites are limited but still give the sim a 9/10. Worth the 75$ to me. Once I have time I will spend some on XPlane. I have posted a few shots in the screenie area if anyone is interested. I will be posting more as I take them.

Oh ...and it supports dual processors too.............

X Plane is...

Post by groundsquirrel » Fri Jul 13, 2007 11:51 pm

X Plane is, or was, the competition for FS at one time. While it tended to lack scenery, it more than made up for it with a much more realistic flight dynamics engine. What aircraft could or would not do in FS, they could do in spades in the X-plane simulation. When you have some spare time, just do a generic search for X-plane and click/link/scroll away an hour or so and you will see that there seems to be a still serious following for it. Of late, there are more addins available for it, but X-plane is now absolutely eclipsed by FSX and will probably be done for once everybody is on new machines with DX10 etc.

By the way, X-plane was also configurable for MAC OS where FS was a nightmare to use due to the necessary windows emulator console when running MAC.

And I will counter that GS.

FSX flight dynamics still suck, as they do for FS9.

How can I say this??? Quite easily....I have it, and fly it. I have the 8.60 version, the newest.

As for scenery, X-Plane is better than FS9, and in some aspects better than FSX. The big difference will be when DX10 for FSX is released. Untill then, It is 50/50 for scenery between FSX and X-Plane.

I still LMAO when I come to this forum, and have it, but can't Mod it. 8O

EDIT: Also check this link... http://x-plane.com/ It is where you can d/l the demo and updates.
